They still make money by retaining a commission, but it works out much cheaper than a bank. It was started by the founder of another innovative company you may have heard of, Skype.
The way it works is that they never make a conversion, they keep multiple currencies from their users and transfer money between currencies when they have both available. It is still fast and well communicated.
They have mobile apps or a site. I successfully used them and it is a nice experience.
